When it comes to beautifying a home, it can be easy to focus on the larger picture first. Yet, sometimes tiny details — such as a corner trim — can accentuate the look of your home.

Residents, potential buyers, and realtors alike will notice the corner trims on your home and make a judgment based on how they are styled.

While properly maintained and well-polished trims can elevate the appearance, exterior corner trims that are poorly maintained or installed may detract from it.

That is why it is essential to know how to install trims correctly. Whether you’re trying to install them yourself or work with a contractor, following the below-mentioned steps will ensure that your PVC trim boards are installed correctly.

Here are the steps involved in installing an exterior corner trim:

Step #1: Drawing Measurements

Do a proper measurement of the corner length you want to trim from the wall’s underside to its base.

Use this measurement to draw a cut mark on an exterior corner trim board with a pencil. The length of the trim board should be adequate to enable you to mark out the measurements.

With the help of a carpenter’s square, draw a line across the mark and then use handheld cutting equipment to cut the board.

Step #2: Secure Boards Temporarily

Put one of the trim boards on edge. One of the corners should be towards the perpendicular wall. After this, you have to drive two finish nails through the wall.

One of the nails should be driven closer to the top of the board and the other nail should be driven closer to the bottom. These nails will help in holding the boards in their place temporarily.

Step #3: Finishing Nail Placement

The other exterior corner trim board should be positioned on the perpendicular wall and adjusted so that one of the edge’s faces aligns with the first trim to give a seamless look.

You can use two finish nails to ensure that it remains firm.

Step #4: Spiral-Shank Placement

Get the nails removed from the first board and force the board firmly against the other one. Next, drive spiral-shank nails into the board in a pair of two.

It would be advisable to begin from the top and ensure that a 24-inch gap remains between the pairs.

You must be very mindful while following this step and steadily move towards the bottom. First, you have to make sure that the boards are lodged together while you nail them.

Step #5: Filling Placement

Using the technique above, drive the nails into the second board.

There is one important thing you need to remember here. Drive one nail very close to the board’s edge from each pair to ensure that it sinks into the board’s edge behind it.

This will result in filling up the small opening between the boards.

Create a 45-degree bevel cut closer to the corner of one of the boards with the help of your cutting equipment and turn around the other board and create a similar cut near the joining end.

Put a nail through one of the boards so that it stays firmly in a particular position for some time. After this, finalize a position for the other board and match the placement of the angles. Finally, to secure the joint, drive a shark nail through it.

The use of exterior corners as an architectural detail can add a certain amount of flair to the appearance of your home while also providing improving the home’s defense system.

They are especially useful when surface materials are exposed and liable to damage, or moisture ingress must be controlled, as in external or high-level applications. Such structures include window reveals, door reveals, wall-to-wall junctions, attention-grabbing exterior corners, and feature walls.

Installing these trims need not be a tiresome process. While some prefer a quick installation process with pre-assembled trims, others hire technicians to install the exterior corner trim. Of course, you can also conduct the installation on your own quite conveniently by following the process mentioned above.
